While men’s cricket might have been around for more than 250 years, women’s cricket is basically just as old. The first women’s cricket match was recorded on July 26th, 1745 between eleven maids of Bramley and eleven maids of Hambledon. Even though it was the first official match, it took more than 100 years for the first women’s cricket club to be formed. The White Heather Club became the first women’s cricket club in 1887 and was based in Yorkshire.

 

 

While England was the home of the first female cricket club in the world, Australia became the first country to initiate an official women’s cricket league. The league was founded in 1894 and several other countries founded multiple new female cricket teams during that time as well. South Africa and Canada were amongst the countries to launch women’s cricket clubs.

Nevertheless, it took almost more than 100 years for the International Women’s Cricket Council (IWCC) to be founded. The organization started in 1958 and coordinates women’s cricket matches all across the globe. Prior to the IWCC, the Women’s Cricket Association was responsible for these matches – it was created in 1926. Since 2005, the International Cricket Council (ICC) merged with its female counterpart and formed a unified body that is responsible for both, male and female cricket.

International Women’s Cricket & Competitions

The inaugural female cricket Test match between England women and Australia women took place in December 1934 and paved the way for upcoming matches. New Zealand became the third nation to compete in Test matches and by 2007, there were 10 official nations competing in Test matches.

Just like in male cricket, there are also One Day International matches in women’s cricket. The first female One Day International match took place in 1973 and they have been gaining incredible popularity since that time. Nowadays, there have been eight times more ODIs than regular Test matches which proves the huge popularity of this fast-paced format of the game.

 

 

Despite the above-mentioned international cricket events in female cricket, there are also major international competitions that take place on a regular basis. One of the grand tournaments is the Women’s Cricket World Cup. The World Cup took place nine times and so far there have been three countries that have won that competition: Australia, England, and New Zealand.

While the World Cup remains the largest international competition of female cricket, the T20 format did also became highly popular in women’s cricket. In 2004, the Women’s Twenty20 International was launched and nowadays there are more Twenty20 matches than ever before. Since 2009, there is also an ICC Women’s World Twenty20.

Ellyse Perry from Australia not only made her international cricket debut at the age of 16, but she is also the youngest Australian player to play an international match. She is an all-rounder and one of the best players in the game.

Best Women’s Cricket Teams & Records

The Australian female cricket team holds the record for most international wins in One Day International matches. The squad played a total of 332 matches since 1973 and won a total of 261 games and lost just 63 times. The team has a win percentage of ~ 80% which is the best average by a wide margin.

The second-most successful team is England with 204 victories in 348 during the same time span. However, the time has just a win percentage of slightly above 60% which is way worse than Australia’s win share. New Zealand is currently in the third spot with 171 wins in 341 games, but India is slowly but surely getting better. The team has a greater win percentage and if they keep up that pace they will sooner or lately catch up to New Zealand in terms of total games won and take over the third spot in that ranking.

 

 

Australia is currently also holding the record for most consecutive wins in that format. The team has actually piled up three huge winning streaks of 21, 17, and 16 wins in a row. Even though they are playing exceptionally well, India has also managed to win 16 games in a row with a first win against Australia on February 7th, 2016 in Australia and they scored the final victory of this epic streak against Ireland on May 15th, 2017.
