The Twenty20 Cup was established in 2003. It is an English and Welsh first-class county cricket competition and was the first Twenty20 league in the world. Twenty20 cricket itself was introduced in 2003 and quickly became one of the games most popular formats. It is fast-paced and games usually last about three hours compared to Test and first-class cricket matches which can last three to five days.

Vitality Blast Cup History

The Twenty20 Cup is a limited-overs competition for the English first-class county clubs that was introduced in 2003 and replaced the Benson & Hedges Cup after 31 years.

The name Twenty20 is explained by the format of the games, as the innings of both teams are limited to 20 over, so a game lasts less than three hours. Batsmen must score significantly faster than usual and the entertainment value is greater due to the more rapid play. The shorter playing time and the late afternoon start of the game make it possible for many cricket fans to attend a game even during the week.

 

 

After the “English Premier League”, originally planned to start in 2010, was suspended, in 2010 there was only a modified game format with two groups of 9 players (North and South, instead of the previous three groups of 6 players) with a subsequent knockout system from the quarter-finals onwards.

Therefore the board decided to extend the preliminary round matches to about six weeks. The finals day with the two semi-final matches and the final on the same day in one stadium were retained. NatWest became the official sponsors of the Twenty20 Cup in 2014 and the competition was renamed to NatWest T20 Blast.

Vitality Blast Teams & Competition Format

The competition consists of two different divisions: Northern Division and Southern Division. In the past, there used to be three divisions occasionally, but since 2014 there have been only two divisions. The four best teams of each division will advance to the playoff stage and play in the quarterfinals. The final of the competition usually takes place in the last days of September.

 

 

The teams competing for the title are: Derbyshire Falcons, Durham, Lancashire Lightning, Leicestershire Foxes, Northamptonshire Steelbacks, Notts Outlaws, Birmingham Bears, Worcestershire Rapids, Yorkshire Vikings, Essex Eagles, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent Spitfires, Middlesex, Somerset, Surrey, and Sussex Sharks.
