Virat Kohli is the captain of the India cricket national team. He was born on November 5th 1988 and plays for the Royal Challengers in domestic cricket. Currently, Kohli is the highest ranked One Day International batsman in the world and he also has the best Test rating amongst his fellow Indian batsmen.

 

 

Kohli joined a professional cricket club very early in his career. He started training at the academy under Rajkumar Sharma and his trainers and teammates quickly noticed his incredible talent. His father supported his cricket training since the early games and was his biggest support.

In October 2002 he started playing for Delhi Under-15 team. One year later he also became the captain of the team for the 2003-2004 Polly Umrigar Trophy. Due to his great performances in his club, he also became part of the India Under-19 team in July 2006.

Virat Kohli’s First-Class Debut

Kohli made his first-class debut against Tamil Nadu in November 2006 at the age of 18. Even though his father died on 18 December 2006, he decided to play against Karnataka on the day after. Kohli went straight to the funeral after the game finished.

 

 

One year later, he made his Twenty20 debut in the Inter-State T20 Championship with 179 at an average of 35.80. He was his team’s highest run-getter in that game. One of his greatest achievements came in 2008 when the Indian team won the ICC Under–19 Cricket World Cup. He captained the victorious team and was the tournament’s third-highest run-getter.

International Success

After he won the U-19 Cricket World Cup, Kohli also became part of the Indian One Day International team. He played his first match in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the tour of Sri Lanka. He was amongst the youngest players to be ever called to the team.

Kohli made his international debut at the age of 19 and quickly benefited to the team’s success. Afterward, he also became part of the Test team in September 2008. He replaced the injured Shikhar Dhawan.

 

 

The batsman also set a record by becoming only the third Indian batsman to score two One Day International centuries before their 22nd birthday. Soon after, he also became vice-captain of the national team and became the fastest Indian batsman to achieve 1.000 runs in ODI cricket. Virat Kohli setting new records

Virat Kohli took the captaincy of the Indian Test team for the first time in December 2014 during the Australian tour. He replaced MS Dhoni who couldn’t play due to an injury. Kohli scored a hundred on his Test captaincy debut and was the fourth Indian to do so.

 

 

After MS Dhoni had announced his retirement from professional cricket, Kohli became full-time captain of the team. During a Test series in Australia, he scored a total of 692 runs in four Tests which is the most by any Indian batsman in history.

In 2017, the batsman captained the Indian national team for the first time in the ICC Champions Trophy. In that tournament, he became the fastest batsmen in history to reach 8,000 runs in ODI in 175 innings. The Indian team made it to the final but lost to Pakistan. However, Kohli has been named as part of the “Team of the Tournament” by the International Cricket Council.
