Seven years later, South Africa became the third team to play Test cricket in 1888-1889.

Test Cricket Status Teams

Currently, twelve national teams have acquired Test status. The International Cricket Council awards the status and Afghanistan and Ireland were the latest new members and were promoted on 22 June 2017.

 

Even if a team does not have Test status, international teams still have the option to play first-class cricket in the ICC International Cup which is played under similar conditions as Tests.

The teams with Test cricket status are:

Australia, England, South Africa, West Indies, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Ireland, and Afghanistan.

Three unique teams acquired Test status. Usually, teams are representing independent nations, however, England represents both England and Wales, the West Indies are a combined team from fifteen Caribbean nations and territories and Ireland represents both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Test Match Competitions

There are several different Test match competitions in cricket. Most of the matches are played as a series of matches between two teams. The hosting nation is playing all matches on home soil and there is often a perpetual trophy that the winning team acquires.

Usually, there are one to seven matches in a Test series. Up until the early 1990s, the home team also provided the umpires. However, the ICC decided to boos the public interest in Test matches by introducing a rotation system. Nowadays, all Test teams are now playing against each other over a six-year cycle.

There is also an official ranking system and the ICC rewards the highest-ranked team with a trophy. The council also provides umpires and there is an elite panel of eleven umpires that the organization created in 2002. Currently, there are 15 different trophies. The first of these trophies is The Ashes.

India is currently the best Test cricket team in the world. They have accumulated 5,211 in 45 matches and have a rating of 116.

World Test Cricket Championship

Even though there has not been a Test cricket World Cup yet, a league competition for Test cricket started in 2019-2021. The tournament schedule is a set of series in various countries and the home team is facing a visiting team. The length of each series varies between 2 matches and 5 matches.

Ireland, Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe are not participating in this competition. Instead, they are playing a program of Test matches against competing teams and each other.
