India is one of the most successful teams in Cricket World Cup history. The team has won the 1983 Cricket World Cup which was hosted by England and Wales and won the World Cup in 2011 on home soil. First World Cup in 1975

England hosted the first official Cricket World Cup in June 1975 and India also competed in this competition. The World Cup consisted of two weeks of One-Day matches played 60-overs-a-side. Back then, there was a group stage, however, there were only four teams in each of these groups. India was in Group B going up against England, New Zealand, and East Africa – a team of cricketers from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Northern Rhodesia.

 

 

Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan was captaining the team back then. The squad was fairly inexperienced in one-day cricket – they have played their first ODI just one year prior to this competition in England. Therefore experts did not consider them to be favorites in 1975.

India played its first game of the Cricket World Cup against England at the legendary Lord’s in London. Unfortunately, the team lost the match by 202 runs which made advancing to the semifinals extremely difficult. The team’s next opponent was East Africa and they crushed them for an easy victory. India had to win the final match against New Zealand to have a chance of reaching the semifinals, but their bowlers were completely hammered by Glenn Turner and New Zealand managed to chase down the target. The team consequently finished third in Group B.

1983 Cricket World Cup

Even though the team did not perform well in the 1979 Cricket World Cup, the times have definitely changed in the 1983 edition of the World Cup. While the team has not been considered to be title-contenders prior to the tournament, they had plenty of world-class players in their squad. Their captain was Kapil Dev who was one of the best all-rounders in world cricket back then and they also had multiple other outstanding players as well.

 

 

The tournament format of the competition has been slightly changed prior to the start of the 1983 Cricket World Cup. There were still two groups with four teams each but the teams had to play each other twice during the group stage. India was part of Group B which was considered to be the stronger group. The team had to face Australia and the West Indies which were dominating world cricket at the time. Zimbabwe was also in the group.

India won their first match against West Indies at Old Trafford in Manchester which was a huge upset that nobody expected. After that victory, they went on to easily beat Zimbabwe, however, they lost their next match against Australia and the West Indies took revenge for their most recent defeat against India. The team was facing elimination at that point and had to beat Zimbabwe and Australia by huge margins. If they would have lost just a single match, they would be automatically knocked out of the tournament.

Knockout Stage

The team managed to come up with fantastic performances in both games and defeated both Australia and Zimbabwe. India beat Australia ba 118 runs and finished second in the group and advanced to the semifinals to play against the hosts England. The team defeated England at Manchester and even though England was favored to win the match, they fell victim to a highly-motivated Indian cricket team.

India had to face the West Indies for the third time in the final of the 1983 World Cup. The team lost the toss and had to bat first. West Indies were playing very well and ripped through the Indian batting. However, Kapil Dev led the team and ran a great distance to take the wicket of Richards off Madan Lal’s bowling. The match was turning at this point and the Indian bowlers took care of business. India won their first World Cup title which was one of the biggest upsets not only in cricket.

2011 Cricket World Cup

It took almost 30 years for India to win their second World Cup title but the team managed to become the world’s best team in 2011. India was one of the host nations for the 2011 World Cup and experts expected them to put up great performances because the team was well familiar with the conditions.

The team played exceptionally well prior to the start of the competition. They beat Australia and New Zealand in back-to-back series and had a fairly decent tour in South Africa. Knockout Stage

The team faced Australia in the quarterfinals at Mohali. The team won the toss and went on to bat first. India ended Australia’s title defence aspirations and the squad advanced to the semifinals against their arch-rivals Pakistan. India maintained its all-win record over Pakistan in the World Cup and advanced to the final against Sri Lanka in Mumbai.

Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat first. The team was performing really well and was at a decent total of 274/6 after 50 overs. Nevertheless, India did not give up and Yuvraj and Dhoni led India’s chase and they won the match by six wickets.

2019 Cricket World Cup

India was considered to be one of the favorites before the start of the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England and Wales. India qualified for the semifinals on top of the group with 7 victories, 1 loss, and 1 no-result. The team then had to face New Zealand at Old Trafford. The match against them was a thriller and had to be spread over two days due to rain. New Zealand was batting first and they reached a score of 239/8 in their first 50 overs. The team eventually won the game by 18 runs and knocked India out of the semifinal stage for the second consecutive time.
