The Marylebone Cricket Club was founded in 1787 and is based at Lord’s Cricket Ground since 1814. The club is based there since 1814 and it used to be the governing body of cricket still remains highly relevant in terms of its global influence on the game of cricket.

The MCC gained the responsibility of the Laws of Cricket in 1788 and is still responsible for the rules and also owns the copyrights. Even though the International Cricket Council (ICC) is mainly deciding over changes to the game, the Marylebone Cricket Club used to be the main lawmaker for the game of cricket for a very long time.

The MCC also organized the majority of international tours of the England cricket team for Test matches. The England team was even called MCC in non-international matches. However, in 1993 the ICC and the Test and Country Cricket Board gained administrative and governance functions.

Marylebone Cricket Club History

The Marylebone Cricket Club was founded as a gentlemen’s club in the 18th century. The gentlemen’s club back then had multiple purposes and was also a social meeting place and received lawgiving responsibility for the game of cricket. One of the club’s most famous members was Thomas Lord, who played first-class cricket from 1787 until 1802. He is also the founder of the legendary Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Thomas Lord was asked to find a new ground for the club and even this new venue was located in Marylebone and initially was called the New Cricket Ground, it was known as Lord’s. Since the new facilities were located in Marylebone, the club decided to call themselves the “Mary-le-bone Club”. The first match at the new ground was consequently played on May 21st, 1787. A total of eight matches were played this year on the pitch and one of these matches was a single wicket event.

Marylebone Cricket Club Grounds

In the history of the club, there have been three different grounds: the first one was located on the Portman Estate and two on the Eyre Estate. All three grounds were based west of Regent’s Park. The Marylebone Cricket Club played on the Lord’s Old Ground on the Portman Estate until 1810 when Lord decided to cancel the lease contract because of a rent increase. More than 200 cricket games took place at that ground and it was afterward occupied by Dorset Square.

 

 

After he moved out of the previous ground, Lord decided to rent two fields in the North Bank area of St John’s Wood Estate. The new venue had a was cheaper rent and was also free of both land tax and tithe. While the new ground was fairly unpopular at the time, it remained active. It was a difficult time for the game of cricket due to the Napoleonic Wars and the possibility of civil unrest in England.

 

 

The second ground is also referred to as Lord’s Middle Ground and during the three years that Lord’s was in charge of it only six matches took place there. Lord had eventually to abandon the Middle Ground due to a canal construction in 1813. Once again he approached the Eyre family and they leased him a plot in St John’s Wood. This third ground then became the present, legendary Lord’s and remains to be the home of the Marylebone Cricket Club until today.

Marylebone Cricket Club Membership

Nowadays, there are 18,000 full members and 5,000 associate members in the MCC. These members have voting rights and they can also use the Pavillion and other stands at Lord’s to watch all games. Before joining the waiting list of candidates for membership, you need to obtain the vote of three members. Moreover, a person that wants to become a member needs the sponsorship of a person on the List of MCC Sponsors. There has been a huge waiting list for many years and currently, you would have to wait 27 years to join the Marylebone Cricket Club.

Today’s Situation & Controversies

The Marylebone Cricket Club refused to allow female membership until the 1990s. Rachael Heyhoe Flint initiated the move to change by applying “R Flint” to slip into the male-only application system. Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie who was supporting women’s membership for a long time became president of Marylebone Cricket Club in 1996 and started a 2-year campaign to advertise the membership to vote to change the rules.

In September 1998, a 70% majority of members voted to allow female membership, and 10 honorary life members were immediately admitted, including Baroness Heyhoe Flint. The Queen was the only woman to be permitted to enter the Pavillion during play.

There was another controversial decision regarding the permission by the MCC to allow spectators to continue to bring limited amounts of alcoholic beverages into the ground at all matches. This decision basically challenged the International Cricket Council which was trying to ban alcohol from all international matches across the globe. The Marylebone Cricket Club decided to write the ICC on an annual basis to seek permission for members and spectators to bring alcohol to Lord’s. It remains the only cricket venue in the world where spectators are allowed to bring their own alcohol drinks.
