The Laws of Cricket is a code that sets the rules of cricket in the whole world. The first edition of these rules was drafted in 1744 and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in London has been maintaining and owning the laws since 1788. The MCC has re-coded the Laws six times and published the seventh edition of the code in 2017.

Currently, there are 42 different Laws that cover all aspects of cricket and tell the players how the game is meant to be played. The Marylebone Cricket Club has owns the copyright of the Laws of Cricket and it is also the only institution in the world that is allowed to change the Laws. However, prior to a change, they have to consult the ICC and further interested parties such as the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers if they want to make a change.

 

 

Therefore it is safe to say that all parties of cricket will be able to contribute before an actual to the Laws is actually made. Moreover, there are also several further regulations that supplement the Laws of Cricket as well. Depending on the particular competition there can be variations and that is exceptionally often the case for international matches. These additional rules are also referred to as “playing conditions”.

Laws of Cricket History

Cricket is one of the world’s oldest and most traditional games and the origin of the game go back to the 16th century. Historians found the first actual evidence of the Laws of Cricket at Guildford in the 16th century and back then, they believe that it was a boy’s games when it was invented. However, during the next decades they game evolved and more and more adults started playing the game, too.

During the early stage of the game of cricket, there were rules, but there were several different variations and in most cases, teams and players made oral agreements instead of actually writing down the rules. Therefore there were oftentimes uncertainties. Due to the fact, that punters started betting on cricket matches during the 17th century, more money became involved and all involved parties became interested in an actual set of rules to avoid any further uncertainties. Back then, it was not even unusual that a team would get sued for non.paymewnt of wagers if a punter ended up losing a bet.

 

 

The first time teams and players formally agreed on a set of rules, was in 1727. They wrote down the Articles of Agreement which stated the rules which would apply to the contests that were to be played. These written down rules eventually became the Laws of Cricket. They consisted of a list of 16 points and many of them remained in a similar wording in the current version.

Laws of Cricket 1744 Code

Even though the first code of Laws was enacted in 1744, it was not actually printed until 1755. The “noblemen and gentlemen members of the London Cricket Club” drew down the Laws. According to this set of rules and pitch would have a length of 22 yards and stumps had to be 22 inches with a six-inch ball. The rules also stated the standard weight of a ball which is between five and six ounces.

The Laws of Cricket in 1744 did not actually require the bowler to roll the ball, therefore it was apparently legal for him to perform a pitched delivery. Underarm pitching became popular in the second half of the 17th century and the modern, straight bat was eventually introduced because of it. In 1771 an incident on the pitch led to the creating of a new Law regarding the size of a ball. Since then, a ball is supposed to have a maximum width of four and one quarter inches.

Relevant Changes since 1788

There have been multiple revisions of the Laws, however, there have also been several times that the MCC published a completely new code. The first that happened was on 19th May 1835 and the latest new code of October 1st, 2017 includes gender-neutral language and a code of conduct.

Despite these major changes, there have also been further changes to the Laws of Cricket since 1788. The dimension of the wicket for example changed multiple times and nowadays it is 28 inches by nine inches. Back in the 17th century, the two-stump wicket was 22 inches by six inches. Moreover, there were four balls in an over in 1744 and this did not change until 1889 when a five-ball over was introduced. Since 1900 this number was increased even further to six balls and is now the standard worldwide.

 

 

At the beginning, the no ball was at first ruled only for overstepping the bowling crease. The bowler’s hand on delivery had to be above the elbow back then and there wasn’t even any control over bowling action until 1835. Overarm bowling became legal in 1864 and was a huge addition to the game of cricket.

Today’s Laws of Cricket

The current edition of the Laws of Cricket from 2017 replaced the last edition from 2000. The MCC remains in charge of the rules and the process in MCC is that the sub-committee prepares a draft which is passed by the main committee. Nowadays, the Laws of Cricket consist of four different parts: the preface, preamble to the Laws, 42 Laws, and 5 appendices that add additional definitions to the Laws of Cricket.
