Gloucestershire is one of the eighteen first-class county clubs in the domestic cricket structure in England and Wales. The club was founded in 1870 and has been playing first-class cricket ever since and competed in every single top-level domestic cricket competition in England.

The home ground of the club is located in the Bishopston area of north Bristol. It is called the Briston County Ground, however, the club is also playing several of its games at the Cheltenham Cricket Festival at the College Ground, Cheltenham. Gloucestershire CCC played its first County game against Surrey on Durdham Downs and won the match by 51 runs. Furthermore, the club has also played at the Gloucester cricket festival at The King’s School, Gloucester.

14 years later, Dr. Henry Mills Grace suggested leasing land in Eastville for a County Ground but the plan didn’t work out. However, new negotiations regarding some land at Ashley Down started four years later, and eventually, it became the Ground of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. The first game at the new ground took place on July 1st, 1889.

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club History

The history of Gloucestershire goes way back to the end of the 17th century. Back then, cricket in today’s form was non-existent, however, there was a similar sport known as “Stow-Ball”. The game has been played for roughly 100 years and the first actual game of cricket was played in Gloucester on September 22nd, 1729. It took more than 100 years for the GCCC to be founded and not a lot has been found outside parish cricket.

 

Dr. Henry Grace and Alfred Pocock founded Mangotsfield Cricket Club in 1846 which eventually became Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. Gloucestershire joined the first-class county clubs subsequently and quickly gained strong competitors called the Cheltenham and Gloucestershire Cricket Club.

The club played its first first-class match against Surrey on June, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th 1870. Dr. Grace’s family has been dominating the early days of the club – W G Grace was the club’s first captain and kept that position until 1899. During the early days, GCCC managed to win three Champion County titles in the 1870s and was one of the most successful teams of that early era of cricket.

 

 

Even more than 100 years later in the 1990s to 2000s GCCC kept dominating One-Day cricket. Gloucestershire won multiple titles and even though they didn’t have a significant budget, they attracted several international stars to join the squad. Gloucester didn’t win any relevant title for more than a decade until 2015. The team beat Surrey in the Royal London One-Day Cup at Lord’s and their captain Michael Klinger became MVP of the competition.

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club Grounds

Even though the team played its debut home game in first-class cricket at  Durdham Down in the Clifton district of Bristol, it remains the one matches for the team at that particular venue. One year later they started to play their games at the Clifton College Close Ground and it became their home venue until the 1930s. Gloucestershire played more than 100 matches during that time and used a different stadium in 1872 outside Bristol at the College Ground of Cheltenham College.

 

 

Gloucestershire started playing at the Bristol County Ground in Bristol in 1889 which became the club’s headquarters. The club also played more than 150 first-class games at the Wagon Works Ground since the 1920s until 1992. Even though there were discussions regarding a potential return to these ground in 2012, it didn’t work out after all. Nowadays, the GCCC is playing its matches either in Bristol or Cheltenham.

Team Records

Wally Hammond set the club record for most first-class runs. He scored 33,364 runs during his career for GCC and he was also captain of the English cricket team. Charlie Parker is the player with the most wickets for the club. He took 3,170 wickets throughout his career at GCCC and is the third-highest wicket-taker in the history of first-class cricket.
