One Day Internationals are a form of limited overs cricket. This kind of game is played between two international teams and each faces a fixed number of overs. Due to its fairly short length of just one day, ODIs have become really popular in recent years. The first ODI ever took place on January 5th, 1971 between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

 

 

The International Cricket Council is maintaining the ODI Rankings for teams, batsmen, bowlers, and all-rounders. England is currently the number one team with a rating of 123 and 44 matches and 5,405 points. However, India is not that far behind – the team has a rating of 119 and has played a total of 49 matches, and collected 5,819 points.

Greatest win margin

While Australia scored the greatest win margin by runs during a 2015 World Cup match against Afghanistan with 275 runs, the overall world record has been set by New Zealand. The team scored a 290 runs margin victory against Ireland on July 1st, 2008 in Aberdeen.

The team competed in a tri-series involving Ireland and Scotland. McCullum and Marshal were the most successful players in that amazing victory.

Lowest totals defended successfully

India set a world record for the ages against Pakistan on March 22nd, 1985.  The team defended a margin of 125 against the arch enemies in the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Highest innings totals

Highest innings totals are a team effort and England set the record straight for this world record in recent years. The team has been performing exceptionally well and set two straight world records for the highest innings totals in One Day International history.

 

 

They went 444-3 against Pakistan on August 30th, 2016 and it barely took them two years to beat their previously set record. England went 481-6 in 50 overs against Australia on June 19th, 2018.

Most consecutive wins

Australia is the most successful team when it comes to the world record of most consecutive victories in a row. The team went unbeaten from 11 January 2003 until May 24, 2003. They won a total of 21 games in a row and not a single team was even close to this record.

 

 

Nevertheless, three teams managed to score 12 victories in a row – South Africa in 2005, Pakistan and South Africa in 2017.

Most consecutive defeats

While there are multiple highly successful teams, there have also been fairly performances throughout the years. Unfortunately, Bangladesh is currently holding the two world records for the most consecutive defeats. The first time that they went on a winless streak was on March 31st, 1986 which ended in 1998. They left the pitch twenty-two times in a row as the losers. Their most recent streak of consecutive defeats took place from 1999 until 2002 when the team conceded twenty-three matches in a row.

Most career runs

Sachin Tendulkar is not only one of India’s most remarkable cricketers ever but he also set lots of incredible world records. He competed in One Day International matches from 1989 until 2012 and set the world record for most career runs at 18,426.

 

 

He is the best player in that category by a fair margin and Kumar Sangakkara from Sri Lanka is the player with the second-most career runs with 14,234 runs in total. It will probably take a long time for Tendulkar’s world record to be broken.

Highest individual scores

All world records for the five highest individual scores have been achieved in the past decade. Rohit Sharma broke the world record with 264 runs on November 13rd 2014 against Sri Lanka.

 

Martin Guptill came close against West Indies on March 21st, 2015 but came up short with a total of 237 runs.

 

 

Virender Sehwag set the initial world record with 219 runs during India’s ODI against West Indies on December 8th, 2011.

Most wickets

The most wickets world records are dominated by cricketers from Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Muttiah Muralitharan took 534 wickets in 350 matches from 1993 until 2011. The second-most successful player is Wasim Akram from Pakistan – he took 502 wickets in 356 matches from 1984 until 2003.
