Somerset County Cricket Club is one of the eighteen first-class county clubs of the domestic cricket structure in England and Wales. It was founded in 1875 and used to be a minor county before it gained first-class status 20 years later. The club was playing in the County Championship since 1891 and its limited overs squad was used to be called Somerset Sabres. However, nowadays it is only referred to as Somerset.

The SCCC played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England and plays its home matches in the County Ground, Taunton. Tom Abell is the club’s booth team and One Day captain and Jason Kerr is coaching the team. Somerset is one of the cricket clubs that was considered a minor county since its foundation. Even though it gained the first-class status soon after, the history of the SCCC remains rather complicated.

The Marylebone Cricket Club granted the SCCC first-class stats in 1895 and it also became a senior Twenty20 team in 2003. Even though the team has never won the County Championship, they have won multiple titles. The 1970s were the team’s greatest time and they won the Gillette Cup and John Player League in 1979.

Somerset County Cricket Club History

The first time a cricket match took place in Somerset was in 1751. A match was played in memory of Frederick, Prince of Wales who was a great patron of cricket. The Lansdown Cricket Club was the first actual cricket club in Somerset and was founded in 1825.

The County Cricket Club was founded in August 1872 and the team was initially known as the Gentlemen of Somerset. They played their first matches in 1860 and competed in a match that lasted two days against the Gentlemen of Devon in Sidmouth. They won with eight wickets and therefore made the decision to start their one cricket club. Originally they did not plan to look for a permanent home stadium, but to play their home games on different playing fields in the county. This did not change until 1881 when Taunton Athletic Club built a playing field near the River Tone. This was used for games since 1882.

 

 

Even though the team played second-class cricket, they won the Second Class Championship in 1890 and were promoted to the next year. In the next year, they finished third, however, they have stayed in the lower half of the table until the First World War. The team was not successful at all during that time and finished dead-last in the table four times in the early 20th century.

Post First World War

 

After the First World War, a fifth place was achieved in the first season, which should remain the best placement between the First and Second World War. The team wasn’t performing terrifically well and ended up most of the time in the middle of the table. Players such as Arthur Wellard and Harold Gimblett however, were part of the national team at that time.

After the Second World War ended, Somerset managed to achieve a fourth place in the table. However, the team did not keep performing as well as in 1946 and they finished at the bottom of the table for four consecutive times from 1952 until 1955. That period of bad performances lasted no longer than that though. The team improved and kept finishing in the middle of the table and occasionally even managed to finish in third place.

 

 

Within two days in 1979, the team won the Gillette Cup and the John Player League. Players such as Ian Botham, and West-Indians Viv Richards and Joel Garner were the most important players in the high phase that had now begun. In 1981 and 1982 they won the Benson & Hedges Cup and in 1983 they won the NatWest Trophy again. In the County Championship Somerset was able to climb higher again and another third place was achieved in 1981.

However, the team has been unable to maintain the level of success it has achieved in the glory days. Somerset is still one of the teams that have never won the County Championship. Their highest finish is being second which was achieved in 2001, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2018, and 2019.

 

 

In the 1990s the club moved up to the higher echelons of the league, culminating in the 2001 season when captain Jamie Cox finished second behind Yorkshire in the County Championship and won the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy. However, the relegation to the second division followed in the following season.

The last title to date was won in 2005 by winning the Twenty20 Cup. In 2007 he was promoted again to the first division of the County Championship. Since then Somerset has won the second division of the County Championship four times (2010, 2012, 2016, 2018). In 2019 Somerset won the Royal London One-Day Cup.
