The Hundred is a professional cricket franchise and it the first edition will take place in 2021. The competition is based on the fairly new 100-ball cricket format. The England and Wales Cricket Board has come up with the idea of a fast cricket format in 2016. 100-ball cricket is a form of limited-overs cricket. Two teams are playing against each other in a single innings which consists of 100 balls.

The Board was initially planning to start the first season of the competition in 2020, however, they had to postpone it due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021 there will be eight teams playing in this competition in the round-robin league and the best once will advance to the playoffs.

 

 

The Hundred is a city-based competition and each county will receive £1.3m per year at least. In the beginning, the tournament was supposed to be a Twenty20 competition, however, due to concerns regarding the importance of the tournament, the ECB decided to shift the format to an even more action-packed approach. Therefore they came up with the idea of a 100-ball cricket format with 15 six-ball overs and a final 10-ball over.

The Hundred Key Statistics

During the process of the creation of a new cricket format, the England and Wales Cricket Board made several adjustments to it. Below you can find the most relevant adjustments and differences to regular cricket matches:

100-ball History

Back in July 2018 Trent Woodhill became a consultant for the new format of the game. The ECB appointed him to assist them with the new format that would be supposed to become an official shortly.

Before the first The Hundred season, there was a 100-ball tournament that was launched by the Warwickshire Cricket Board and Warwickshire County Cricket Club in November 2018. The tournament featured 16 teams that were playing under the new rules and it had three divisions and each team played against each other twice – once at home and on the road. Stratford Upon Avon won the final and became the first victorious team in the history of the new 100-ball format in the United Kingdom.

 

 

Soon after the tournament had ended, the ECB has decided to slightly adjust the rules of the new format. They have introduced 10 ten-ball overs which means that after ten balls ends would have to change. Since then, bowlers could only deliver a maximum of 20 balls per innings.

The Hundred Structure & Teams

The tournament will be lasting 38 days during the school summer holidays. There will be eight teams competing for the title from July to September and each team will be playing four home matches and four matches on the road. Therefore there will be 32 games in total and only the three best teams will make it to the playoffs.

The best team of the group stage will automatically advance to the final. The second and third teams will be playing against each other in the semi-final and the final will take place in the same stadium on the same day.

 

 

Teams competing in The Hundred are not named after cities or counties and will be playing under different names. The teams that will be playing in the upcoming season are the Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers, Birmingham Phoenix, Trent Rockets, Welsh Fire, London Spirit, Oval Invincibles, and the Souther Brave.

There are 15 teams in each team and only three of them may be coming from overseas. Teams are signing players in a draft system which is common in many other leagues such as the Indian Premier League. Moreover, each team in The Hundred will include at least one England Test player.

The Hundred Perception and Criticism

The Hundred is a new approach to attract a new audience to cricket. While regular cricket matches can last several days there will be games at a fast pace which will be entertaining to watch. The Hundred matches will be shorter and therefore also more appealing to fans who don’t want to spend a lot of their spare time to follow a single match.

 

 

Even though multiple critics and experts are opposing the new format of the game it will be interesting to see how fans are going to perceive it. England Test captain Joe Root appreciated the new format and assumed that it might help cricket to appeal to a larger audience. However, other icons of the game such as Virat Kohli have concerns about the commercialization of the game and did not quite like the new format.
