The “Never-Ending” Match – About the Longest Cricket Match in History

The longest Test match in history took place in 1939. The so-called “never-ending” match was played between South Africa and England at Durban. The match was also a timeless Test. There were only 99 timeless Tests between 1877 and 1939 and that particular game was the final timeless Test in history.

 

The “never-ending” match was played from March 3rd to March 14th. It lasted for a total of 43 hours and 16 minutes of plays. Both teams combined for a total of 1,981 runs, 5,447 deliveries, and the match eventually ended in a draw. The match had to be concluded because the English team would have otherwise missed its boat back to England.

Even though the match was expected to last not more than five days, but rain and rolling rejuvenated the pitch three times throughout the game.

Further long matches

Australia was the only country to run timeless Test matches until World War II started. However, only there were still two draws due to unexpected events. The Test match against England in 1882 ended in a draw.

The overall longest Test match in Australia however took place between Australia and England in 1929. The game was played in Melbourne and it was the Fifth Test between these two countries. The match lasted eight playing days and Australia managed to beat England by five wickets.

The first timeless Test match to be played in England took place in 1912. It was the ninth match of the 1912 Triangular tournament between England and Australia.

Why do cricket matches last so long?

First of all, cricket was invented a long time before the TV or the internet became popular and widely accessible. The game was and is highly tactical which makes it exceptionally difficult to understand and to play.
