The wicket-keeper position mainly depends on the bowler. In order to fast bowl, he will squat some distance from the stumps to have more time to react to edges from the batsman. In case of slow bowling, he will move close to the stumps to pressure the batsman into remaining within the crease or risk being stumped.

Substitutes

Substitutes have not been allowed to keep wicket until 2017. However, that ban has been lifted in that year in the updated edition of the Laws of Cricket.

Throughout the years, this initial ban has been lifted occasionally for several matches. Therefore, captain of the batting side had to make an agreement with the opposing team.

Artur Jones has been the first substitute to keep wicket in a Test match. That historic event took place in 1905 when he played against Australia at The Oval.
