Cricket is one of the oldest and most traditional types of sports. The sport has been mentioned for the first time in the late 16th century. Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond played an important role in the early days of cricket.

Even though the first officially testified cricket match has been playing in 1550, historians are fairly certain that the beginning of cricket was earlier than 1550 somewhere in south-east England. Cricket History in the 18th century

Betting played a large role in the development of modern-day cricket. Back in the days when there were no competitive teams, gamblers decided to strengthen their bets by forming their teams. Historians think that the first county teams were formed in the aftermath of the Restoration in 1660. Local cricketers from village cricket turned into the earliest professional players.

While cricket has been first played in England, it didn’t take long for it to expand beyond England. The sport came to North America through the English colonies in the 17th century. During the 18th century, cricket kept expanding and the colonists introduced it to the West Indies and India. Cricket reached Australia as soon as colonists entered the country in 1788. Both New Zealand and South Africa came into contact with cricket in the early 19th century.

 

 

The rules of cricket existed since time immemorial, however, in 1728, the Duke of Richmond and Alan Brodick came up with the Articles of Agreement. The document determined the code of practice in a specific game – it also became a common feature especially for punters who were betting on the matches.

The Laws of Cricket were codified in 1744 and have been amended in 1774. They brought several innovations and the MCC became the custodian of the Laws. Cricket kept growing in England and the first famous clubs were founded in London and Dartford during the early 18th century. One of the most important events in cricket history was the opening of Lord’s Cricket Ground in 1787.

19th-century cricket history

The 19th century brought fundamental changes to the game of cricket. All modern-day county clubs were founded during the 19th century and the first commercial events took place. William Clarke created the traveling All-England Eleven in 1846. The team largely helped to popularize the game through a commercial venture and brought cricket to places that have not seen it before.

The railway network development also elevated the popularity of cricket to a new level. People started being able to travel long distances within short times and could save lots of time. Therefore spectators could travel longer distances to match. Crowds in the stadiums kept growing and the majority of the Empire embraced cricket at that time.

 

 

The legalization of overarm caused a bowling revolution in 1864. In that very same year, Wisden Cricketer’s Almanack has been published for the first time. The first-ever international cricket match took place twenty years earlier. The United States played against Canada in 1844 on the grounds of the St George’s Cricket Club in New York.

A team of English professionals flew to North America in 1859 and played a first-ever overseas tour. Soon after, in 1962, the English team toured Australia for the first time in cricket history. 15 years later, England toured Australia once again and played two matches against full Australian XI – these matches are considered to be the inaugural Test matches.

20th-century cricket history

The above-mentioned Test matches gained popularity during the 20th century. The Imperial Cricket Conference was founded in 1909 and England, Australia and South Africa were the first members. The West Indies (1928), New Zealand (1930) and India (1932) joined after World War II. Pakistan joined the organization in 1952.

The international game kept growing with new ICC Affiliate Members. Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh became members in the last quarter of the 20th century. Test cricket became the highest level of standard in the 20th century. However, it also had its problems. One of the most notable incidents was the infamous “Bodyline Series”. Douglas Jardine’s England used the so-called “leg theory” to attempt to neutralize the run-scoring of Australia’s Don Bradman.

 

 

The apartheid brought one of the biggest crisis to international cricket. After South Africa left the Commonwealth, its cricket board had to leave the ICC. Cricket was opposing the apartheid and England canceled its tour to South Africa. The ICC members voted to suspend South Africa indefinitely from international cricket completion in 1970. Due to the lack of high-level competition, South Africa started “rebel tours”. They spent large amounts of money on international players to form teams. The ICC blacklisted rebel players in response and banned the from international cricket.

English teams started playing a new version of cricket in the 1960s. There was just one inning each and a maximum number of overs per innings. Limited-overs cricket quickly gained popularity. Subsequently, a national league emerged and caused a reduction in the number of matches in the County Championship.
