Bowling is the counterpart to batting the ball in cricket. The bowler is propelling the ball towards the batsman who is defending the wicket. In general, there are two different types of players who are bowling the ball. There are bowlers who are highly and specifically skilled at bowling. The second group is the so-called all-rounders who are capable of bowling and batting.

 

 

A single process of bowling is also referred to as delivery or ball. Bowlers are bowling deliveries in sets of six – that is an over in cricket. After a bowler has bowled an over, another teammate is up next to deliver an over from the opposite end of the pitch.

There are certain rules players have to follow when making a delivery. If they don’t bowl the ball according to the Laws of Cricket, the bowled ball will be declared illegal and the umpire will rule it a no-ball.

Bowling History

Nowadays there are several different bowling techniques. However, that was not the case in the early days of the game. Underarm bowling was the only employed method back then. In the early 18th century the first description of the game has been published by William Goldwyn who mentioned two teams carrying curving bats to the venue, choosing a pitch and arguing over the rules of the game.

 

 

The first issue of the Laws of Cricket has been created in 1744 and the first cricket club in history was created in 1760. During that time it also became more popular amongst players to pitch the ball through the air instead of rolling it on the ground.

The game became faster and provided bowling players with multiple options to attach spin and curving to their bowling motions. The previously used curved bats have also been replaced with straight ones to allow batsmen to properly hit the ball under the new circumstances.

Moreover, several crucial changes to the game have been made during the 19th century. Wide deliveries have been banned from the game in 1811 and the circumference of the ball has been specified in 1838. During the early 19th century, players have been still delivering the ball under-arm. However, players soon shifted to the “round-arm” technique which has been developed by John Willes.

Bowling Strategy

Cricket consists of two main objectives: taking wickets and preventing run-scoring by the opponents. Therefore players that are bowling the ball need to try to prevent the bowler from hitting the ball. The bowler has to prevent the batsman from hitting the ball in such a way that he is unable to control the ball when hitting it.

 

 

There are three different approaches to achieve that goal. The bowler can bowl the ball on a good line and length, he can bowl it at a fast pace so that the batsman is unable to react properly, and he can also try to bowl the ball so that it has lateral movement when it is close to the impact.

Bowlers are practicing daily to develop and improve their bowling skills and there are bowlers who can combine multiple tactics when bowling the ball which makes it even harder for batsmen to hit the ball properly.

Limited overs cricket is a format of the game where overs for each bowler are limited. The amount depends on the length of the game and usually, it is 20% of the total overs in the innings.

In the twenty-over cricket format, a bowler has four overs, forty-over cricket provides bowlers with eight overs each and fifty-over has ten overs per bowler.
