Fielding in cricket is a really important part of the game. Fielding is the action of fielders collecting the ball after the batsman struck it. It helps to limit the number of runs that the batsman can score and it can also get the batsman out if a player catches the ball in flight or by runs the batsman out.

Throughout the history of the game, there have occurred fielding positions that can be now categorized into the offside and leg side of the field.

Fielders can field the ball with any part of their bodies, but if the ball is in play and he willfully fields it otherwise, the ball is called dead and the batting team gets five penalty runs unless the ball previously struck a batsman not attempting to hit or avoid the ball.

Basic knowledge of fielding positions will give an advantage and will also allow you to better understand cricket matches in general.

Fielding Positions

The area to the left of a right-handed batsman is called the leg side or on side. If there is a left-handed batsman, the leg and off sides are reversed and fielding positions are mirrored. A cricket team consists of 11 players of which one is the bowler and another one is the wicket-keeper. Therefore there are only nine other fielding positions that players can cover.

 

 

The captain is usually deciding which player is going to cover which fielding position on the field. He can move players at any given time, only when a bowler is in the act of bowling to a batsman he may not change positions.

Due to a large number of possible fielding positions, there are no clear pre-set positions. That means that players can be placed in positions that are different from the basic positions.

Attacking and Defending

Finding the right balance between attack and defense is the most important task of a fielding captain. Attacking fields are ones that allow fielders to be positioned to be likely to take catches and therefore to get the batsman out. Usually, fielders will be located rather close to the batsman with multiple slips and a gully, these are the most common positions for catching mis-hit shots.

 

 

Defensive fields are usually set up so that the batsman finds it hard to score a large number of runs. Most of the field is covered by a fielder and fielders are located fairly far away from the batsman and in front of him. These are the positions where he is most likely going to hit the ball.

The captain has to consider multiple important factors when he is deciding between attacking and defending. The batsman, state of the wicket, light and many other factors need to be weighed against each other.

Fielding Skills

There are certain differences between defending and attacking when it comes to fielding skills. Both aspects of the game require fairly different skill sets. However, it is safe to say that both approaches require a combination of multiple different skills in each position of the field.

 

 

When playing a far away from the bat, usually at the boundary edge, the player must be able to prevent the ball from going over the boundary. By doing so they can prevent the opponent from scoring four or six runs.

To achieve that the players have to be able to quickly cover a large area of the field in a short amount of time. Moreover, they need to have a strong arm, because they have to cover large distances with their throws. Reliable catching skills are also an absolute must.

When playing in a shorter distance from the batsman, players need to have insanely quick reactions. Because the batsmen are often hitting the ball extremely hard, it will quickly accelerate and therefore fielders need to react quickly and also athleticism to go for spectacular diving catches.

Infielders are also the main source of run-outs in a game of cricket. Therefore they have to be able to throw the ball quickly and straight.
