Cricket is the by far most popular sport in Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi national cricket team won the ICC Trophy in 1997 and the Cricket World Cup in 1999. Bangladesh Premier League

The Bangladesh Premier League features seven franchises from Bangladesh is one of three professional cricket leagues in the country. The league was founded in 2011 it is operating on a draft system similar to US Sports. This means that teams can draft players to improve and new players are acquired by the teams every year in a large draft event.

Cricket World Cup

The ICC Cricket World Cup is not only the most important cricket tournament in the world, but it also a competition every cricket fan in Bangladesh is waiting for. The tournament takes place every four years and only the best cricket teams in the world are participating. Therefore it is a huge event for the Bangladeshi national team.

Bangladesh is considered serious title contenders in almost every tournament and even though they have not won the World Cup yet, it seems like it’s just a matter of time when we will see them at the top.

Bangladesh Games

The Bangladesh Games are the largest sports event in Bangladesh. The tournament was founded in 1978 and athletes from all districts of Bangladesh can participate. The most recent edition of the competition featured 31 different disciplines with close to ten thousand athletes.

Although cricket remains the number sport in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Games shift the focus to other sports. The first edition included basketball, boxing, gymnastics, volleyball, athletics, cycling, shooting, weightlifting, and wrestling.

Kabaddi in Bangladesh

Kabaddi is the national sport of Bangladesh. It is highly popular across the country and Bangladesh is one of the best Kabaddi teams in the world.  The Bangladeshi kabaddi team won the bronze medal at the 2006 Asian games and finished 3^rd two times in a row in the Kabaddi World Cups in 2004 and 2007.

Football

Football is the most popular sport in the world and it is the second-most popular sport in Bangladesh after cricket. Even though the Bangladeshi national team is not as successful as many other teams, there are lots of fans watching the FIFA World Cup and following international leagues.

The Bangladesh football team is currently ranked 197^th in the world which makes it difficult for them to qualify for major international tournaments. However, there is plenty of potential in the youth teams and a lot of room for improvement shortly.

Hockey

Hockey has a long-lasting tradition in Bangladesh. The national team is frequently playing in major international tournaments such as the Hockey Asia Cup and there are multiple national tournaments, as well.

Hockey became popular in Bangladesh during the British period during the last century. However, the Bangladesh Hockey Federation was founded in 1972, but they managed to become a full member of the International Hockey Federation just three years later.

 

 

The best hockey teams of the country are playing in the Premier Division Hockey League. The Bangladesh men’s national field hockey team is currently ranked 37^th in the world and they have won multiple bronze medals in the South Asian Games. Moreover, Bangladesh won the AHF Cup in 2008, 2012, and 2016 three times in a row.

Chess in Bangladesh

Chess has been highly popular in Bangladesh. The country produced multiple world-class players like Niaz Murhsed who became the first Grandmaster from Bangladesh in 1987. The Bangladesh Chess Federation joined the FIDE in 1979 there are multiple national and international tournaments held in Bangladesh every year.

Table Tennis

Table tennis is one of Bangladesh’s favorite sports. It is extremely popular in educational facilities like schools and colleges and there are also several tournaments throughout the year. Even the Bangladeshi Table Tennis Federation was founded not too long ago in 1972; it instantly became a member of the Asian and World Table Tennis Federations.

 

Table tennis is especially popular amongst young players and Bangladeshi players have been performing really well in most recent international competitions.

Golf in Bangladesh

Golf has recently become more and more popular in Bangladesh. Even though cricket and football remain at the top of the popularity rankings, it is safe to say that there is an increasing number of people following and playing golf in Bangladesh.

Siddikur Rahman was the first player from Bangladesh to win an Asian Tour event at the Brunei Open in 2010 and since then Bangladeshi media have been providing coverage for multiple golf events. Even though there has not been another exceptionally successful player from Bangladesh until now, the newly drawn attention will influence younger players to compete at a high level.
